Young Lawyers Rise to the Occasion During recent Protests

03/10/2024

For the past 12 days since the #ReOccupyJulorbiHouse and other protest began, a dedicated group of young lawyers under the banner of Lawyers for Protest Defence (LPD) has made a significant impact.

They have tirelessly visited every police station and detention facility in the Greater Accra Region, offering not only legal advice and representation to protesters but also serving as search parties for those who have gone missing. Demonstrating incredible commitment, these lawyers have taken on additional responsibilities, purchasing and distributing food, toiletries, and other essential supplies to detainees—all funded from their own pockets.

Their efforts extend beyond legal representation; they are also acting as vital intermediaries, connecting the families of detainees with civil society organizations and police authorities. Justice Srem-Sai has commended these young lawyers for their unwavering dedication and the essential role they play in protecting the rights of protesters. He emphasized that their actions not only support those currently detained but also highlight the importance of legal advocacy in the face of civil unrest.

Working around the clock, the young lawyers display remarkable resilience and determination, showing little to no frustration in the face of challenges. Currently, there is at least one lawyer for each of the 54 protesters detained.

Kudos to these young lawyers for their unwavering support and commitment to justice!
