53 Ghanaians Arrested Amid #ReOccupyJulorbiHouse Protest Against Galamsey

03/10/2024

In a significant turn of events during the ongoing #ReOccupyJulorbiHouse protests in Accra, 53 Ghanaians have been arrested and are currently being held in custody. These individuals were detained due to their active involvement in the demonstrations, which aim to advocate for a ban and prosecution of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

This menace has had devastating impacts, particularly on the country’s water bodies and environment.
The protests have garnered widespread support from citizens demanding urgent action to address the rampant illegal mining activities that have resulted in severe ecological degradation and pollution. As communities grapple with the consequences of galamsey, demonstrators are calling for accountability and meaningful reforms from government authorities to protect Ghana's natural resources.

In response to the arrests, legal advocates, particularly those from the Lawyers for Protest Defence (LPD), have rallied to provide support for the detained protesters. They are ensuring that those arrested receive proper legal representation and assistance while working to maintain communication between detainees and their families.

The ongoing situation underscores the critical importance of upholding civil liberties and the right to protest in Ghana. As the nation grapples with these tensions, the calls for justice and accountability continue to resonate among the public, with many demanding the immediate release of the 53 individuals and a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding their arrest.
